Events Summary

This page summaries some of the Society's key internal/public events and social activities that are held throughout each year.

Set up in 1993, the Coventry Irish Society provides a range of services to all generations of the Irish

community in Coventry and the surrounding areas.

We have a long tradition of helping the most vulnerable members of the Irish Community in Coventry,

and our aim is to provide a culturally sensitive service that gets the necessary help, support

and advice to as many Irish people as possible.

What we get up to!

St Patrick’s Day Festival - March

Our annual Festival is normally held over several days and includes Irish music, arts, dance, comedy, Gaelic speaking and poetry. The 2023 festival includes the relaunch of our oral history exhibition ‘Irish Heart, Coventry Home’.

A St Patrick’s Day Programme is also produced to showcase all the Irish arts and cultural events happening across the city.

Those wishing to advertise their event should contact Coventry Irish Society before the end of February each year.

Summer Ball - June

The event aims to bring all the Irish community interests together for a great night of celebration and craic!

This annual event is always very popular amongst all generations of the Irish community, and it is great to see three generations of Irish get together.

Keep an eye on our website blog for ticket sales.

Our Summer Ball programme is also available for Irish businesses to advertise and support the charity.

Bi-Monthly Irish Elders Lunch Clubs

The project organises six Lunch Clubs per year averaging 80 participants at each event. The Lunch Club aims to reduce social isolation and act as a cultural celebration and bonding between the older Irish community.

Supported by the Health Outreach Workers, health promotion events, advice and information are deployed at the Lunch Clubs. Guest speakers also attend some of the events.

The group remains a key gateway for members to access other information, services and related support.

Weekly Dementia Support Group

The group provides a culturally sensitive service for members of the Irish community living with the early to medium stages of memory loss. The group also acts as respite to Carers of those people living with early to medium stages of memory loss. It provides a range of activities, events, advice, and support to help combat the impact of Dementia on individuals and their Carers.

The group is held one half day per-week normally Wednesdays at Christ the King Parish Centre.

Those wishing to refer someone to the group can contact the charity on 02476256629 or email cis@covirishsoc.org.uk

Weekend Irish Festival - June

The project aims to bring together Irish organisations and interested individuals to organise an annual Irish arts and cultural festival within the city. This is a collaborative project between Irish organisations and interested individuals, with the intention of celebrating Irish arts and culture in an event that grows and develops each year.

The project follows on from the city of culture event ‘Love Ireland’ which was a week long programme of events that was received well within the community. The showcase included a GAA event where Coventry teams competed against a West Midlands side, and this will be a key event going forward.

Weekly Claddagh Group

(Social Befriending support group)

The Claddagh Group is a popular social befriending group for Irish elders that meets weekly every Monday from 12pm to 2pm. In addition to teas and coffees, there are weekly activities such as play your cards right, bingo, cake sales, guest speakers and talks.

There are also regular outings and visits to other Irish elders groups such as Corby and normally an annual holiday takes place to Ireland or visits in the UK. There is a weekly subscription of £2 per-week which contributes towards the activities.

New members can turn up to the group and talk to one of our organisers about joining.
